SDS Post Photography Editing Skills

What can I say about post photography editing work?

Everyone knows the pseudonym it goes by, ‘photo-shopping’, but few realise what this entails.

In the beginning, I learned the art of photography, using film. I learned to take quality photographs without having the luxury of a ‘preview’ of the image. The first time that I would ‘see’ the photos that I had taken for each assignment was after the film had been developed into negatives and/or contact sheets, to select the photos for printing. Job done!

As a professional, the quality of the images had to be perfect in the set-up and in that moment. This skill is what separated the professional from the amateur photographer. I was also one of a handful of professionals that had the ability to touch-up a negative by hand – with a single hair paint brush and a magnifying glass that looked the like the Hubble space telescope.

With today’s advancements in technology, images can be previewed on the camera and the necessary adjustments made to the set-up to get it ‘just right’. Photographers also have the advantage of being able to manipulate the image after-the-fact. BUT this is hugely time consuming and not all photographers make good ‘photo-shoppers’. This has resulted in the advent of Photoshop experts who specialise in post-photographic work.

Fortunately for me, I had ‘old-school’ photographic skills with a deep understanding of concepts such as contrast, lighting, topography etc. and I was able to transition to using the software programs, which were in infantile stages when I made the change. I have kept up with the enhancements to these programs and my post-photographic skills are ‘scary-good’ compared to most photographers. I find that the only disadvantage is that it is immensely time-consuming, so I have a few dedicated experts that make me look like a learner. They eat-sleep-drink Photoshop.

I have displayed some of our ‘before and after’ images for you to view. You might expect that we will be expensive because our quality is so good, but we hope that you will be pleasantly surprised to find that that is not the case. Email us for a quote.
